  • Pilgrim's Progress bible study Pt 7: Interpreter's House

19 years ago I gave a Bible study to a group of inmates that was based on the book "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.  Written in the 1600's, the book has been a helpful parable for many millions of Christians over time.  In working through this, I updated much of the King James English, concepts and even some of the characters --- because I wanted those I was studying with to understand not just the story, but the main point of what the Christian Life is like.  It's not always smiley faces, rose gardens, tea and crumpets.  Often, it's hard work, perilous temptations and doubts, and warfare.

So here's the seventh part of the study as I gave it --- 19 years ago.  Feel free to use this in your own group studies if you think it will help, just make sure you credit John Bunyan for the original story and me for removing the "Thee's", "Thou's" and "Wheretofore's".

Part 1 Linked here --- Part 2 Linked here --- Part 3 Linked here --- Part 4 Linked here --- Part 5 Linked here --- Part 6 Linked here --- Part 8 linked here

Narrator (Nar) --  Now as you may recall, I told you of a dream, of a man who carries a heavy burden in his heart and who wanted release from it.  Further bring to mind his journey from the City of Destruction, through the Marsh of Discouragement, to the Sheep-Gate... a place which was pointed out to him by one named Evangelist.  At the gate he met Mr Goodwill, who asked of his travels and his intended destination, then instructed him on where to go.  It is here where we begin anew.

I saw Christian walk on and in due time arrive at the house spoken of by Mr Goodwill.  When he arrived at the door, he knocked over and over saying:

    Chrs  -

    Pray thee please open
    for to me twas spoken
    that here, find I, learning
if my heart tis yet open.
    So harken my plea
    and open, sir, please
    for I come a-yearning
    wisdom from thee.

Nar -- Presently there came a servant of the house who asked him his name and purpose.

Chrs  -   Sir I am a traveler who was told by another to ask of you for a place of rest and to learn.  I ask, therefore, that I may speak to the master of this place.

Nar -- By that the servant called the master of the house, who came in just a little time and asked him what it was he wanted.

Chrs  -   Sir, I am a man come from the City of Destruction and I am on my way towards Mount Zion.  I was told by the man that stands at the gate a small ways from here that if I stopped by here I could find rest and that you would show me excellent things that would be helpful to me on my journey.

Interpreter (Inter) - Come in, I will show you much that you may learn by.

Nar -- Once inside, Christian saw that the room was furnished plainly, but that one portrait hung there on the walls.  A very striking portrait indeed, of a serious man whose eyes were lifted up towards Heaven.  In his hand was that same book that had warned Christian of his impending doom, and he saw that the Law of Truth was spoken by this man.  Behind him was the entire world, and he stood as though he pleaded with men to follow.  Lastly there was a golden crown that hung over his head.   All of this amazed Christian so that he asked Interpreter:

Chrs  -   What is the meaning of all this?

Inter - Ths man's pictyure is one in a millions, for from the Word of God he is capable of fathering men (1 Thess 2:11-12; 1 Corinthians 4:15), bearing the pain of doing the same (Gala. 4:19)  and feeding them himself from the world when they're so born.  (1 Corinthians 3:2)   You see him with the best of all books in his hand, and the law of truth upon his lips.  This shows that his work is to know and show the evil of a sinners heart, even as you see him pleading with men here in this portrait, so he does with the hearts of men.  (Romans 10:14-15)

You also see him with his back to the world, his eyes lifted up to Heaven, and a crown hung over his head.  These things speak of his despising his own life and the things that the world would offer him in favor on the one who calls to his heart, His Master.  And for his faithful service His Master is well pleased to crown him with Glory and salvation.  (Mark 8:34-38; Colossians 3:1-4; Matthew 25:21-23; 1 Corinthians 3:12-15; 1 Peter 5:4; Romans 8:23)

I showed this portrait to you first for the type of man whom this picture belongs is the only man whom the Lord of the Place where you are going has authorized to be a Guide.  Surely there will be many difficult places along the way, this is why I showed you that you might pay all the more attention to these things.  Bear in mind what you have seen or else in your journey you will meet with some who would try to mislead you and take you down a side path or alley that will surely lead to your death.

Nar -- At this he lead him a bit further down the hallway to another room and when the door was opened Christian saw that the room was full of dust, on the floors, on the furniture, on the bookcases and even  on the very walls.  Everywhere within the room was covered thick with dust.  Now soon came a servant whom Interpreter called, and he was ordered to sweep the room.  As he did, a great dust cloud filled the air choking out all who stood by and when he was done, the dust settled, and it appeared as though he'd not worked at all.

While Christian marveled at this, Interpreter called in a maid servant and he told her to bring a flask of water.  When she had come, he instructed her to sprinkle the water on all parts of the room and as she did, the dust disappeared!  As soon as she finished, the room appeared as though no dust had ever been.

Chrs  -   "What is the meaning of this?"  Christian asked in amazed wonder.

Inter - This room represents the heart of a man that was never cleaned by the Sweet Grace of the Gospel, the dust was his original sin and corruption that have defiled him completely.  (Matthew 15:11, 18-20)   The man who swept first was the Law, but she who came to sprinkle was representative of the Gospel.  (1 Peter 1:3; Ephesians 1:7-9)

Now you will recall that as soon as he began to sweep, the dust flew about so thickly, that by himself the room could not be cleaned.  Remember how you choked upon it?  This was to show you that by deeds of the Law, instead of cleaning a heart, it causes sin to arise and strengthen and increase.  For by the power of the law is to show sin in the heart, not to cause it to abate.  (Romans 5:20, 7:8-9, 3:20; 1 Corinthians 15:56)

But then you saw my maidservant sprinkle water upon the room, by which it was easily cleaned.  This was to show that when the Gospel comes with it's sweet and precious influences upon the heart, just as the water upon the room, it cleanses of sin and causes it to disappear and the soul of a man is made ready by it for the King of Glory to live in.  This mystery comes by faith in He who has the power to clean out hearts, that He would do so to them that will believe.  (John 15:3; Acts 15:9; Rom 1:16, 16:25-26; Ephesians 5:26)

    1. Take a look at the contextual 1 Corinthians 3:2 & Hebrews 5:11-14, 6:1-3.   What is the spiritual feeding that Father of Souls provides?  (See also 2 Timothy 3:16-17)  How might the reading of the Word of God change to meet your own needs as you grow, to become more like meat than milk?
    2. Listening to Interpreter speak, who would you say is the man in the portrait?  Is he a preacher or pastor only, or is he a common man?  Why would you say either?
    3. If the Father of Souls is a common man, re-read that section and think about how those scriptures might apply to your own life.  How might you, yourself, become better equipped to follow the advice of Peter to "Always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that is within you."?  (1 Peter 3:15)
    4. How "dusty" is your own life?  Read Romans 9:16 & John 1:13 and discuss or think about how our efforts to clean our own hearts are either effective or ineffective and why.
    5. A question often asked is "How can we know the Will of God?"  Look at John 6:39-40, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17, 1 John 3:14, Hebrews 13:20-21 & Ephesians 5:15-21.  Based on these verses, what do you feel God's will for you might actually be, and how does it work itself into a Christian life?   (The answer to this is a practical explanation of Romans 1:16-17 and how God empowers us through Faith to please Him as we could not do so before.)

Part 1 Linked here --- Part 2 Linked here --- Part 3 Linked here --- Part 4 Linked here --- Part 5 Linked here --- Part 7 linked here

Narrator (Nar) --  now as you may recall I spoke of a dream, of a man bowed under a great burden whom sought release.  Further you'll bring to mind his journey to the sheep gate as pointed to by one named Evangelist.  Last we heard of Mr Christian  (Chrs) he'd gone through the Marsh of Discouragement, only to be misguided by the offensive instruction of one Mr Worldly Wisdom, towards a way that would've been his death.  (Proverbs 14:12)  It was only by the chance meeting of Evangelist, again, who warned him of his danger and couseled him back to the way that was right.  This is where we pick up our story.

In the passing of time Christian finally came  upon the gate.  Now over the gate was a sign that said, "Knock and it shall be opened for you." (Matthew 7:7)  So Christian began knocking and kept at it (Luke 18:7).  While he knocked, he wept and said:

    Chrs  -

    May I now enter?
    Please hear my plea!
    Please open this gate
for a wretch such as me.
    Rebellious at heart (Daniel 9:9)
    and stubborn in ways,
    please open the gate
that I may be free'd to sing praise.

Nar -- At last a very serious and dignified looking man came to the gate, whose name was Mr Goodwill (Goodwill).

Goodwill - Who is there, from where have you come and what do you wish?

Chrs  -   I am a poor, burdened sinner come from the City of Destruction.  I desire to go to Mount Zion, that I may escape the wrath of God that is to come.  I would therefore, sir, since I am informed that this gate will lead me there, like to know if you are willing to let me in?

Goodwill - I am willing, with all of my heart.

Nar -- Upon saying that, Mr Goodwill opened the gate.  Now as Christian was stepping inside the gate, he felt something fly just by him, nearly grazing his shoulder.  It happened so fast that he had no time to even hear it's coming, nor to see where it went afterwards.  Startled, he asked "What was that?"

Goodwill -  A little ways off from this gate lies a strong fortress of which Beelzebub is the captian.  From that place both he and those with him shoot arrows at those who come to this gate, their intent being to kill or scare off any that come this  way, for this way is offensive to them.  Yet, this is a safe passage for them that will come completely into it's protection.  (Eph. 6:16; 1 Corin 1:18; 2 Corin 2:11)  (See Question #1)

Chrs  -   I rejoice, then, and tremble as one who has made it in just barely.

Goodwill  -  Come, let us walk up the path a bit and talk a little along the way.  First, may I inquire who directed you here?

Chrs  -   Evangelist told me to come and knock, and so I did.  He told me as well that you would tell me what I must do.

Goodwill -  An open door is before you and no man can shut it from you.  (Rev 3:7-8)  (See Question #2)

Chrs  -   Now I begin to reap the benefits from my hazardous journey.

Goodwill -  How is it that you came only by yourself?

Chrs  -   Because, sir, none of my neighbors saw their dangers as I saw them.

Goodwill -  Did any of them know of your journey?

Chrs  -   My wife and children knew of it first, and they told me not to go.  Some neighbors of mine stood crying out after me, calling me to return, but I placed my hands over my ears and went along my way.

Goodwill -  Did any of them follow you?

Chrs  -   Yes, two did in fact come after me.  Mr Obstinate and Mr Pliable both caught up with me and attempted to bring me back.  After a while they came to see that they could not reason with me (as they defined "reason", that is to say they could not make me return), so Mr Obstinate went back home.   Mr Pliable did come with me a little ways.

Goodwill -  What happened to cause him not to continue?

Chrs  -   We both came upon the Marsh of Discouragement, and there we fell stuck to it's mires.  As my neighbor Mr Pliable continued he grew discouraged and would venture no further.  He went back the way we'd come, telling me that I may live in the Kingdom to come myself.  So then he went his way towards home and I pursued onwards to the gate.

Goodwill -  Pity the poor man, was Heavenly Glory of such small esteem to him that he thought it not worthy of a few difficulties to obtain?

Chrs  -   Yes, tis the sad truth of Pliable and also, though, of myself.  To hear the rest of my story would make it plain that I am no better.  Although he went back to his home, I went on in the way of death (Proverbs 16:25), having been persuaded to do so by the carnal arguments of one Mr. Worldly Wisdom.  (see Question #3)

Goodwill -  Oh, you met with him?  Did he have you go to seek ease at the hands of Mr Legality?  They are both of them cheats and liars.  You took this man's counsel?

Chrs  -   Yes, I journeyed as far as I dared.  I went to find the house of Mr Legality, but stopped when I saw how the cliffs of the mountain, where his house is, would almost certainly have fallen at any time.  In fear of my life, I could not bring myself to take one step further.

Goodwill -  That mountain has been the death of many, and will, more than likely, be the death of many more.  It is good that you escaped being crushed by it.

Chrs  -   Truly I had no idea what to do there.  Had not Evangelist come by and met me as I stood there depressed, I might still be at that mountain.  Surely it was God's mercy that brought him to me or else I may never have returned to the right way.  (James 5:20; Psalms 23:1,3; Proverbs 3:6b)   But now I've come, as unworthy as I am, for I am more fit indeed to have been in that other way than to be standing here talking with you.  By mercy and grace am I even admitted here!  (Romans 2:4)

Goodwill -  We do not make objections towards any that come, no matter what there crimes were before they came, we will not drive them away.  (John 6:37; 1 Corin 6:9-11)   come with me then, Christian, just a little ways further, and I will show you the way that you should follow.  It was made by the Patriarchs, Prophets and indeed by Christ, the Lord and King of this realm.  His own Apostles laid down the road in words penned by their very blood.  This way is as straight as a ruler, and narrow, but clearly lit and shown.  Follow on in this way until you reach The Hill of the Skull.  Atop that hill you will find the Prince of Peace awaiting you.

Chrs  -   Are there no windings or turnings by which a stranger may loose his way?

Goodwill -  Yes, there are many ways to the side of this path, but they are all wide and crooked and all lead downwardly.  It is in this way that you may tell which is the correct way, in that it alone is straight and narrow.

Chrs  -   Sir, this burden I carry in my heart, will it never find release?  It has caused me no end of anxiety and dread.   Surely I can be free, yes?

Goodwill -  As to your burden, bear with it just a little while longer.  There is a place of hope further along the way, a place of deliverance that shall surely make itself known to you when you get there.

Before you come to that place, though, let me say that there is a place of rest also along the path, not only of rest but of learning as well.  There is a house that belongs to one named Mr Interpreter and he dwells there for the benefit of all who would but stop and listen.  He can show you many wonderful and excellent things if you will but simply knock at his door and ask.  (James 1:5)  These things will be of benefit to you on your journey, both as blessings and as cautions, so any time you spend there will be well invested.

Nar -- At this point they came to a road marked "The Narrow Way" and Mr Goodwill pointed him to the Hill of the Skull a far ways distant.  Christian thanked him for his counsel and set off on his way encouraged by all that had been said to him.

    1. What arrows of Satan might you have experienced?  Doubt?  Despair?  Discouragement?  How does the shield of Faith help?  (Answer: For by faith we lay ahold of the promises of God, to trust them and not give up.)
    2. What is the open door Mr Goodwill spoke of?  (Answer: Christ's offer and promise of Salvation.)
    3. Christian alligned himself with Mr Pliable when speaking to Mr Goodwill, saying that he was no different.  Do you think that this was a fair assessment?  Why or why not?
    4. To whom might the path of Christ truly seem "Straight & narrow?"  (Answer: to anyone of the world who has no spiritual discernment.  Such as these will complain that Christ being "the only way to God" is foolish and confining and surely God will take any that come to him by any path.)

    Testimony

When I first started translating Pilgrim's Progress I was not saved.  I had been in the church for 9 straight years, walking around in Christian circles and even knew theology and had many Bible verses committed to memory.  I was but a parrot, mimicking words I had no comprehension for.

It may seem odd that one would (A) lead a Bible study, (B) translate a Christian classic and (C) undertake to lead men to a Christ that I myself (at the time) did not know.  It is indeed a long story which I serialized years back into 10 chapters and made available here on my blog only to my closest friends.

Why I bring all this up is that I used to date-stamp everything I wrote.  If I put my pen to a piece of paper, the first thing I inevitably wrote was the date and time.  The date on this lesson is "October 9th, 1992  9:50 PM".

The date of my salvation was October 8th, 1992 @ roughly 8 AM, the very day preceding this.

For the record, lesson 5 bears the date stamp of Sept 30th, 1992 --- I gave pause of nearly 9 full days for the Spirit of God to work in my heart, knowing that I could not continue to write of a salvation I knew nothing of...

For a timeline of certain portions of my testimony, here is a link to an open post entitled "16 steps to Salvation".  It will give a solid time frame of all things that led up to my actual salvation the day before.

Likewise, for the record --- let me frankly state that Lesson #1 of Pilgrim's Progress was date-stamped Sept 24th, 1992.  I say this so as to give further clarity to the overall picture --- once you factor in the hard dates / times presented in "16 Steps to Salvation".   It took me 9 years to actually come to Christ... and while I was translating this book I would often wonder during that time at who would come to know Christ first --- Christian in the book as I was translating it, or me in real life.

Ultimately, God allowed me to speak from eyes newly opened.

  • Pilgrim's Progress bible study Pt 5: Evangelist's Return

19 years ago I gave a Bible study to a group of inmates that was based on the book "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.  Written in the 1600's, the book has been a helpful parable for many millions of Christians over time.  In working through this, I updated much of the King James English, concepts and even some of the characters --- because I wanted those I was studying with to understand not just the story, but the main point of what the Christian Life is like.  It's not always smiley faces, rose gardens, tea and crumpets.  Often, it's hard work, perilous temptations and doubts, and warfare.

So here's the fifth part of the study as I gave it --- 19 years ago.  Feel free to use this in your own group studies if you think it will help, just make sure you credit John Bunyan for the original story and me for removing the "Thee's", "Thou's" and "Wheretofore's".

I thought I might also add here that the colors I choose for various characters actually have some meaning.  I have long (over 25+ years now) color coded my Bibles thematically.  What I mean is that when I am reading a passage on grace or salvation or mercy --- I color it accordingly.  Here's a index to my color themes.

    • Any shade of GREEN = grace, forgiveness, salvation, redemption.
    • Any shade of RED =  sin, lawlessness, transgression, evil
    • Any shade of BLUE (apart from my normal blog font coloring) = judgment over, on or for Sin.
    • Any shade of ORANGE = the Character or Nature of God --- Who God is.
    • Any shade of PURPLE = commands to obey, passages that speak with authority on how a Christian should live.
    • Any shade of YELLOW = indicates eternal things or eternity
      • PLEASE NOTE: This one is the only one that changes from what is in my bible.  In the system I use in my Bible,  yellow is reserved SPECIFICALLY for those "The Lord Says"  --- for you King Jamer's out there "Thus Sayeth The Lord" --- passages.  I figure if someone is bold enough to proclaim themselves the mouthpiece of God, then it pays to give these passages special attention.

I'm not going to include this chart in every Pilgrim's Progress post, probably every 5th or 10th... so take a moment to go backwards and look to see how the characters in our story line up.

Narrator (Nar) -  Now as  you may recall, I spoke of a dream, of a man bowed under a great burden who sought release.  Further you'll remember his journey to the sheep gate as pointed out to him by one named Evangelist (Evng).  Bring to mind his travel through the Marsh of Discouragement and his meeting with Worldly Wisdom who pointed him to another way that he might be free, that other way being Mr Legality who lived near a terrifying mountain named Sinai.  When last we saw Christian  (Chrs) , he was cowering at it's foot, terrified by Mount Sinai.

It was not long afterwards that Christian saw Evangelist coming to meet him, and began to blush in shame.  Evangelist came directly to him and as he drew near he looked upon Christian very sternly.  This put even more shame into him so that he began to wish that he could run and hide so as not to be seen.  (Genesis 3:10)  Then Evangelist spoke -

Evng  -- What are you doing here, Sir Christian?

Nar - at this Christian stood silent, not knowing how to answer him.

Evng  -- Are you not the same man I found crying outside the City of Destruction?

Chrs  -  Yes sir, I am that man.

Evng  -- And did I not point you to the sheep-gate and say that that was the way?

Chrs  -  Yes sir, you did.

Evng  -- How is it then that you have come to be lost, for this is surely not the right way.

Chrs  -  I met a gentleman, sir, soon after coming through the Marsh of Discouragement who told me of a man in yonder village that might release me from my burden.

Evng  -- What was he like, this man?

Chrs  -   He looked like a gentleman and had quite a lot to say.  (See Question #1)  His speech was such that it quite convinced me that he was right and so I came this way.  When I got here though, I saw how terrifying this Mountain is and how it might fall upon me at any moment and destroy my life.  Here I have stayed then, unsure if I should continue forward for fear of my life.

Evng  -- Just what did this gentleman say to you?

Chrs  -  He  asked me of my family, but I told him that though I had wife and children I could not take enjoyment of them because of the burden that I bear upon my heart.  (Luke 14:26)

Evng  -- And from this what did he say?

Chrs  -  He counseled me to quickly be rid of my burden, which I told him was my aim.  I told him of your counsel to go to the sheep-gate, and that that was where I was going to receive further instruction.  he then said that he would show me a better way, with fewer difficulties than the way you spoke of.  He pointed to another gentleman's house, who he said has the skill to remove these burdens.

I believed him, so I turned from that way to this in the hopes that I might so soon be relieved of my burden.  Yet when I came to this place and saw things as they are, I stopped for fear of the danger.  Now I don't know what I should do.

Evng  -- Stay and listen, for I will show you words from God.

Nar -- At this statement, I saw that Christian trembled all the more, for fear of what might be said.

Evng  -- See that you do not refuse him that speaks, for if they did not escape who refused him that was from the Earth, how much more shall we not escape if we turn away from He who speaks from Heaven.  (Hebrews 12:25; See Question #2)  For the Just shall live by faith, but if any man draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him.  (Hebrews 10:38)

You are a man who is running into this misery;   you have begun to reject the counsel of the Most High God and to draw back your foot from the way of peace, even, almost, to your destruction!

Nar -- At this Christian fell down at his feet and cried out, "Woe to me, for I am undone!"  Seeing this, Evangelist caught him by the right hand saying

Evng  -- All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men;  do not be faithless but believing.  (Matthew 12:31; John 20:27b) (See Question #4)

Nar -- Upon hearing these words, Christian was encouraged and stood again from where he'd fallen, trembling as before.

Evng  -- Give more earnest attention to these things I say.  I will now show you who it was that set you wrong and to where he was sending you.  This mans name was Worldly Wisdom, and he lives up to his name for he only loves the teachings of this world.  (1 John 4:5)   He attends a church in the Town of Sensuality (1 John 2:15-17) and loves only those doctrines that do not take him to the cross (Galatians 6:12) because he is not of a spiritual mind, looking instead to earthly wisdom. (James 3:15-16; Romans 8:7; Ephesians 4:18-19)  This is why he sought to turn you from the way, even though it was right.  (Romans 1:32 Amplified)

Now there are 3 things from this man's counsel that you should utterly despise and abhor (Romans 12:9)

    1. His turning you from the right way.  (Matthew 24:24)
    2. His attempt to make the cross a shame to you.  (Luke 14:27)
    3. His setting your feet on a way that surely can lead to death.  (Matthew 18:6)

First you must despise his turning you out of the way and even despise your own listening to such advice, for this is to reject the counsel of God for the counsel of this world.  The Lord says "Strive to enter by the narrow way."  (Luke 13:24)  and that is the gate I sent you to, for he likewise says "Narrow is the gate that leads to life and few those who find it."  (Matthew 7:13-14)   It is from that very gate that this wicked man turned you from, bringing you almost to destruction.  Hate, therefore, his turning you away and despise yourself for listening.

Secondly you must hate his working towards making the cross a shame to you, for you are to prefer it over any treasure this world can give.  (Hebrews 11:26)  Besides, the King of Glory has himself said that "They that would save their lives must in fact lay them down and he that comes to me that does not hate his mother and father, wife and children, brothers ans sisters... yes even his own life... they cannot be my disciple."   (Luke 14:26; John 12:25; Matthew 10:39; Mark 8:35)  I say then that a man who would attempt to sway you to a way that would be your death, and that way apart from the true way that brings life, such a man you must abhor.

Lastly, you must hate his setting your feet in a way that leads to death.  For this you must then know who it was that he sent you to and how unable he would have been at removing your burden.  This man, then, that he sent you to, his name is Mr Legality (who also goes by the name Mr Law-Keeper), is a son of a slave girl who still lives and is a slave to her own children.  (Galatians 3:11, 4:22-27)  She is, in a mysterious way, this mountain that you feared would fall on you.  (Exodus 20; Galatians 4:24-25)  Now if she and her children are in bondage, how can you expect to be made free by them?  (Romans 6:20-21; Galatians 3:23)  Mr Legality will not then be able to set you free of your burden and truly no man has ever been freed by his hand.  (Romans 3:20, 28)  You cannot be justified by works of the law, for by deeds of the law no man can be freed of his burdens.  (Matthew 17:28; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16)

For these reasons Mr Worldly Wisdom is an alien, Mr Legality is a cheat and as for his son, Civility, notwithstanding his childlike looks, he is just a hypocrite and cannot help you.  Believe me, there is nothing you have heard of these dishonorable men, except that it be to rob you of your salvation.

Nar -- After this, Evangelist called aloud to the Heavens for confirmation of what he had said and then came words and fire out of the Mountain near which Christian stood.  These things made him scared, greatly, for those words were "All who rely upon observing the Law are under a curse, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who does not CONTINUE to do everything written in the book of the law'."  (Galatians 3:10)

Now Christian looked for nothing but death, and began to cry out sorrowfully, even cursing the time he spent with Worldly Wisdom and calling himself a fool of fools for listening to his counsel.  He was also ashamed that this gentleman's arguments, flowing out of the flesh, should have prevailed upon his thinking and cause him to leave the true way.  This being done, he earnestly questioned Evangelist in this manner

Chrs  -  Is there any hope for me sir?  May I yet turn back and go to that sheep-gate?  Shall I be abandoned for this and sent back from here ashamed?  I am sorry I ever listened to this man, may my sin yet be forgiven?

Evng  -- Your sin is indeed very great, for by it you have committed 2 evils: you have forsaken the way that is good and walked in forbidden ways, yet still will the man at the gate accept you, for he has good will for men.  But I say to you as a warning, do not turn aside again, for the next time you may just die as His anger burns up against you for taking a wrong path.  (Ps 2:12)  Go therefore and make haste to take the straight way, looking neither right nor left!  (Proverbs 4:24-25)

Nar -- At that, Christian put his full attention to getting back and after Evangelist had smiled upon him, shook his hand and bid him Good-speed, did Christian go back to the way.  he hesitated not, but hurried along, and as he passed many, he would neither speak to them nor respond to their questions.  He proceeded as though he was on forbidden ground and would by no means be safe until he reached that way he'd left by the counsel of Mr Worldly Wisdom.

    1. Christian describes Mr Worldly Wisdom as "Looking like a gentleman".  Think about it for a while -- what are some other forms that worldly wisdom might come as?  ie. arguments such as "it won't hurt you to try it..." or "Hey, everyone's doing it..." (from your friends) or the "If it feels good, do it" attitude from society.
    2. Evangelist speaks of 2 testimonies "One from earth and one from Heaven"  Who do you suppose them to be?  (Answer: Moses - The Law  and Christ - Grace. Refer to John 1:17)
    3. Evangelist speaks of a man drawing back whom God has no pleasure in, how do you suppose he drew back?
    4. Think in your mind; what manner of "sin and blasphemy" has God forgiven you of?  Now that it is on your mind, thank Him for his mercy to you.
    5. Evangelist says that the way of the cross must be more preferable than any treasure the world can give.  What "treasure" may tempt you out of that way?  What can you do so that you won't be distracted from following the right way?
    6. Evangelist spoke of Legality not being able to free Christian of his burden.  how does attempting to live by the law keep us from God?  (Hint read Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 3:19-20,27 for consideration of an answer.)
    7. Attempt to explain in your own words the curse of the Law.  (Hint: James 2:10 as well as Galatians 3)
    8. Scripture says that God's mercy endures forever & that His compassions are new every morning.... meaning that He will never fail to forgive you.  Read Matthew 13:21-22 & Luke 17:3-4.  Reflect on how both of these might apply to God, Himself.  (for consideration --- Review the C S Lewis quote in this former post of mine.)
    9. As this is the last time we will see him, who was Evangelist?  (Answer: Any Christian who has walked in the way of righteousness & grasped the meaning of Scripture well enough to help his brother walk along the way.)

  • Pilgrim's Progress bible study Pt 4: Mr Worldly Wisdom

19 years ago I gave a Bible study to a group of inmates that was based on the book "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.  Written in the 1600's, the book has been a helpful parable for many millions of Christians over time.  In working through this, I updated much of the King James English, concepts and even some of the characters --- because I wanted those I was studying with to understand not just the story, but the main point of what the Christian Life is like.  It's not always smiley faces, rose gardens, tea and crumpets.  Often, it's hard work, perilous temptations and doubts, and warfare.

So here's the fourth part of the study as I gave it --- 19 years ago.  Feel free to use this in your own group studies if you think it will help, just make sure you credit John Bunyan for the original story and me for removing the "Thee's", "Thou's" and "Wheretofore's".

Part 1 Linked here --- Part 2 Linked here --- Part 3 Linked here --- Part 5 linked here

Nar  -  Now as you recall, I spoke of a dream, of a man bowed under a great burden who sought release.  Further you'll remember his trek to the sheep-gate as pointed out to him by one called Evangelist.  You'll also remember how he and one named Pliable set off on that journey with much conversation and how the journeyed into the Marsh of Discouragement and how Pliable left in despair of his life.  Thereafter Christian met one called "Help" who led him through and told him the story of the marsh.  It is after these things that we pick up our tale.

Now Christian was left to walk alone, "Help" going back to his own place.  After a little while he saw a man far off coming at him from across a large field.  As it happened, they crossed paths and met.  The gentleman's name was Worldly Wisdom, and he came from the down of Sensuality; a very great town that was close to where Christian had come from.

This man, upon meeting Christian, and knowing somewhat who he was - for Christian's setting out fromt he City of Destruction was spoken of far and wide, not only in the city of Sensuality but wherever gossip may travel - entered into a conversation with him.  He knew it to be Christian for he had heard of the burden he carried upon his back and of the book that he carried in his hand.

Worldly Wisdom - "Hey now, good fellow, where are you off to in such a great single-minded hurry, burdened as you are?"

Chrs  - Burdened indeed, as ever a poor creature has been I think.  Where am I going you ask?  I tell you, sir, I go to yonder sheep-gate, for there, I am told, I shall be shown a way to be free of this heavy burden."

Worldly Wis - Have you family?  A wife and Children?

Chrs  - Yes, yet I am so pressed down by my burden that I cannot take that much pleasure in them as I had so formerly.  It is to me as though I had none.  (1 Corin 7:29)

Worldly Wis - Would you hear me if I were to give you good counsel?

Chrs  - If it be good, then surely I would, for I stand in need of good counsel.

Worldly Wis - Then i would tell you, with all speed, get rid of that burden you carry, for you will never be settled in  your own mind until then.  For I see that because of it you cannot enjoy God's blessings to you until you do just that.

Chrs  - That is just what I am seeking, to be rid of my burdened heart, but alas I cannot get it off myself.  Neither have I found any man in our country able to lift it off of me.  This is why I go this way, as I told you, so I may be rid of this burden.

Worldly Wis - Who told you to come this way to free yourself?

Chrs  -  A man who appeared to me to be a very wise and honorable person, his name as I recall was Evangelist.

Worldly Wis -  Curse that man, for his counsel!!!!  There is not a more dangerous and troubled way in all the world than is that one to which he has directed you. (See Question #4 below)  That is just what you'll find too, if you follow his counsel.  This I see already to be your case, for I see you are covered by mud from the Marsh of Discouragement.  That swamp is just  the beginning of the sorrows that will be faced by those who follow on that way!  Hear me, I am older than you;  you shall surely meet with great weariness, pain, hunger, peril, nakedness, swords, lions, dragons, darkness and even death by that way.  (2 Corin 11:23-27; Hebrews 11:35-38)  I tell you, these things are most certainly true --- having been confirmed by the testimonies of many men.  Tell me then, why should a man so carelessly throw himself away by following the words of a stranger?  (See Question #5 Below)

Chrs  -  Why sir, the burden upon my heart is more terrible to me than are all those things which you have mentioned!  No, I think that I care not for what I will, by need, endure in that way, if it be that I may be delivered of my burden.

Worldly Wis -  How, pray tell, did this burden first come upon you?

Chrs  -  By reading this book that I carry.

Worldly Wis -  Yes, I thought so.  It has happened to you just as it has to other weak men, who, in meddling in things well over their heads, do suddenly fall into your condition.  Such distractions only serve to dehumanize men (as I perceive is your state) and cause them to run out upon foolish ventures to obtain something they cannot even say what is.

Chrs  -  Yet sir, I know what I seek.  Surely it is release from my burden.

Worldly Wis - Why, though, will you seek for ease in such a way that attends to so many dangers?  If you had but just the patience to hear me, I could direct you to a way that would help you obtain these things without the dangers I spoke of.  yes, and this remedy is closer at hand.  I will only add that instead of these dangers, you will meet with much more safety, friendship and contentedness.  (Proverbs 14:12; Matt 16:25a; Luke 9:62)

Chrs  -   Please sir, tell me openly of this way.

Worldly Wis - Look no further than in that not to distant city (which was named "City of Morality") for there you will find a gentleman named 'Mr. Legality' (Whose surname is 'Mr. Law-keeper').   He is a man of very sound judgment and also of a very good reputation, who has the skill to help men rid themselves of burdens such as yours.  To my knowledge he has done a great deal of good in this way, and has even helped those driven crazy by their burdens.  To him you should go and seek your help.

His house is not even a few miles from here, and if he should not be home, himself, His young son named 'Civility' should be able to do it just as easily as his father.  To there I say you should go with your burden to be free of it, and if you are so opinion'd, then back to your home.  Let me hasten to say though that it would be better for you to send for them and set yourself a new home here, for there are plenty of houses to be had in this city, and those quite cheaply.  Living is quite inexpensive in the City of Morality.   I say this in certainty, for never will you find a town with such like-minded neighbors who all keep morality's upkeep as their aim.  It is quite likely that you might even live as a king in this city, for they are very open to holding them in high esteem who undertake to live life by strong moral standards.

Chrs  -  What way is it to this honest man's house?

Worldly Wis - Do you see that hill over there, it is Mount Sinai.  Go towards it and it shall be the first house you come to.

Chrs  -  Thank you sir, I hall be off then.

And with this Christian took off in pursuit of Mr Legality's house for help.

Nar  -  It was not to long before, upon coming near to the hill, he stopped for he saw that the hill was quite high and it seemed that there was a cliff that hung out so far off the hill as that it might fall at any moment.  Christian held there in fear that should he continue, this overhang would tumble down and be his death.  he worried at what to do, for surely he could not continue and yet his burden grew greater still just by his standing there.  There also came flashes of fire from out of this hill (Exo 19:16-18)   Here then he stood in fear and trembling, being sorry that he took the counsel of Worldly Wisdom.

    1. What does Worldly Wisdom first argument appeal to?
    2. Worldly Wisdom immediately tries to turn Christian back, why?
    3. Worldly Wisdom's argument about "enjoying God's blessings" (IE. Christian's Family) doesn't seem all that wrong.  Read Matthew 10:34-36 and then consider again his argument.  What is it about turning to Christ that may bring about what Christ said?
    4. Worldly Wisdom's new argument seems to be based on fear.  Look at 1 John 4:18, 2 Timothy 1:7, Matthew 10:32-33 and Luke 17:32-33.  In light of these passages, what kind of response would you give?
    5. Worldly Wisdom called Christian careless for following "A stranger".  Wouldn't Worldly Wisdom, himself, fall under this categorization?  What does he gain by using this argument?
    6. Worldly Wisdom first calls Christian careless and then later says he is weak and foolish.  How does this affect Christian in his burdened state?  How might you have responded?
    7. Read Genesis 3:1-6, esp. verse 6, and compare that to the dialogue here.  Does does it compare?
    8. Why do you think that Worldly Wisdom failed to mention the mountain danger that Christian saw grew fearful of?  (Ephesians 4:18-19 holds an answer to this question)

  • EARTHQUAKE!!!

BIG ONE .... huge.... I mean huge.  The building shook so had that things scooted forward on my desk!!!  In my 3 years in Taiwan, this is the biggest Earthquake to date.

I don't know where the epicenter was, but it had to be at least a 6 or maybe higher.

I'll update when I know more.

One of the few times... I'm worried.

    Update #1 ------

Here's the current Taiwan Weather Website pic

The Taiwan Weather service says it was a 5.4 and centered off the East Coast of Taiwan... at a depth of 23 Kilometers (14 miles deep).    I've been through a 5.4... and this was stronger.  I wonder how the US Geological Service (USGS.gov) rates it.  They're usually pretty accurate there.

    Update #2 ------

USGS rates it at a 5.1, but has it at a depth of 18.8 kilometers (11 Miles) making it more shallow and prone to being felt.  (The deeper you go, the less you feel it.)

I'll settle on the 5.1, but man it was a scary 20 seconds.  I've never seen things on my desk move before.

  • Disney's New Math

A 200m loss? ---- only if you recreate mathematics and ignore all other pertaining factors.

Personally, I'm getting tired of hearing how badly John Carter is bombing.  I'm especially tired of hearing about how Disney is losing "200 million dollars" on this and how it's a financial black hole for them.  In saying this, Disney is implying that the movie bad or flawed in some fashion.  I've seen the movie, I have to say up front it is not.  It's a great movie with a good storyline and some fantastic imaginative visuals.

What follows --- If I can cut and paste the information --- is IMDB's own account of Box Office takes for this movie world-wide.  Now... I must be up front.  I visited this page 10 days ago --- and the figures were exactly the same then.  It seems unreasonable to me that not one person on the planet has seen the movie in the last two weeks..... so I figure the figures presented are a rough estimate at best, and should be slightly higher, when IMDB decides to update it's database.

Please note that I have changed nothing here EXCEPT the order of the information.  It's presentation at IMDB was very off-kilter.

    €1,044,471 (Italy) (11 March 2012) (377 Screens)

Ok, Now that the information is presented, let's break this down.

Disney claims to be losing "200 million" here.

The movie cost $250 million to make, which is unreasonable as a budget to be honest.... but there was a lot of computer graphics to be worked through, so I suppose it's to be expected.  (The computer graphics were very well done by the way.)

As of March 19th (which was 16 days ago) The movie pulled in  $179 Million worldwide.

Excuse me if I sound pedantic, but 250m - 179m  -200m ---- in otherwords 250m minus 179m DOES NOT EQUAL negative 200m.   Am I wrong here?  The right answer would be a mere 71m.

Even if you only factor in America, as of March 25th (which was 10 days ago) the movie pulled in $62.5m.... which if  you do the math doesn't equal a 200m loss.  (More specifically it would be a $187.5m loss ---- which cheats by not factoring in anywhere else in the world.)

But that's not all.  I haven't the figures to be honest --- but I do imagine that Disney is pulling in some money from franchising the movie through toys, T-Shirts, McDonald's Happy Meals and the like.  That is to say, that Disney is still making money from the movie that they are not reporting in their skewered math figures.

So in conclusion, Disney was looking for the next "Lord of the Rings" franchise --- something which they could pay next to nothing to make and rake in billions in return.  They just didn't factor in the fact that ticket prices are so freak'n outrageous that none of us want to work a full day just to see a movie.  Even here in Taiwan, the price of a movie ticket is nearly $13 US... I can only imagine what the price of a ticket is in America.  When they decide to DROP the price of a movie ticket to a more reasonable level --- maybe more AMERICANS would go to see their movie.  Since it seems it's only Americans they care about.

  • In explaination of where I've gone

For the record --- I am still alive.  I have not vanished, I have not disappeared, and I have not abandoned Xanga.  I have just been busy, that's all.  Busy on Xanga.

Last year I started a project to create a topical index of all my xanga posts.  To work through everything I've written and every comment I made in response to others --- and to work it into an index of subjects and topics so that others would be able to quickly find things they might be looking for.  I did this --- so that I could maybe connect to my children again someday if they ever want to know who I am, what I believe in and what is truth.

I put over 100+ hours into it over the course of 12 months --- and only managed to get 18 months out of 7 years worth of blogging.  In January, I felt the impression that I need to finish this project before I move on.  So while it may seem that I am down to 1 post a month at present --- ignoring Xanga and ceasing blogging.  I have actually been putting all my efforts back into finishing this massive project so that I can move forward from there.

So if you are looking for me .... I'm here, I just haven't finished the horribly huge project I started.

    Prayers are appreciated.

  • When "christian's" aren't very Christian

This picture and the following commentary showed up at Rick Elias Facebook page.  Rick had made a name for himself back in the 1990's with 4 "Christian" CD's released to the Christian Market --- and then being handpicked by Rich Mullins to be one of the founding members of Rich's Raggamuffin band.  Yes... Rich "Awesome God" Mullins had this man backing him up on 3 of his CD releases.  As well, Rick now heads a Christian Musician's ministry... teaching future Christian Music Artist's how to "minister".  (He also has a CD in the works that will be marketed to the Christian Market sometime this year.)

I have to state up front that I have had problems with Rick in the past and called him to task for such things as Unitarian Universalism (The belief that everyone will be saved) when he said he was looking forward to seeing George Harrison (Follower of Hari Krishna and former Beatle) in Heaven.

In that instance I asked when George became saved and renounced his cultish demonic ties..... to which one of Rick's friends spoke up saying that believing in Jesus didn't matter --- as long as someone lead a good life.   I countered with an exposition of the Gospel based on John 14:6 (I am the Way, the Truth & the life --- No man comes to the father EXCEPT through me), Acts 4:12  (No other name whereby we may be saved) and Romans 10:9-11  (Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus Is Lord and you shall be saved)  only to be told by Rick:   Shut up with your dogmatic bullshit, Wayne

No fooling..... those were his EXACT words.

Knowing that we've had our go-arounds in the past, I immediately copied all this information with the understanding that Rick would probably de-friend me from my comment.  I was right.  He most assuredly did so.  Read on.

For the record, Linda Elias is Rick's wife.... she's also released an album of "christian" music in the early 1990's.

Gonna be rough night in Tn & Ky. @ Home http://instagr.am/p/IsbbhiuZY4/

I was right... this was Rick Elias next comment... before de-friending me.

Rick Elias ‎@Wayne - sorry for posting your picture. All apologies. Goodbye.

For clarity's sake for what follows --- the colors in my bible have meaning.  Here's the codex to help understand what follows after

    •     Purple = A command, something we're called to obey or listen to or take careful attention of.
    •     Green = The grace or mercy of God --- or indications thereof.
    •     Blue = The wrath or Judgment of God.
    •     Red = Sin, sinful behavior, or any affront to our Holy Father.
    •     White on Black is merely there for emphasis.  Kind of zeroing in on the key part of a passage.

Through all of this I was keeping in mind the commands of Paul in Ephesians 5:3-7

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.  Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.  For of this you can be sure:

No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.  Therefore do not be partners with them.

So that it's understood this is not an isolated passage, Paul gave nearly the same command in Colossians 3:5-8  (You should continue reading through verse 11, but I'm gonna just cut it at verse 8)

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatryBecause of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

Jesus said that we would be called to account for every idle word that proceeds from us.... how sad it is that we take His name upon our lips and yet never let it affect our actions.  Is it any wonder that Jesus said many would come to him in that day saying "Lord, Lord, did we not..."  (Matthew 7:22)

I dare to wonder if they will honestly be baffled as to why they've been rejected....

  • Poem: Ecclesiastes

3-2-12 1:02 PM Taipei time  "Ecclesiastes"

    I envy the blind
    who cannot see
    the lusts this world offers.

    I envy the lame
    who cannot run
    to chase after worldly pleasures.

    I envy the deaf
    who cannot hear
    the blasphemies men say.

    I envy the dead
    who've ceased to strive
    after foolish and temporary things.

    In vain do men
    toil their days
    seeking fame and fortune.

    In vain do men
    despoil the things
    that come within their power.

    In vain do men
    raise kingdoms up
    to seek permanence and glory.

    In vain do men
    tear down God
to replace Him with self-made idols.

    If man would but
    give his days
    to service of the king,
    Then in the end
    that man shall find
    he's chased the proper things.

    But as for the blind
    as for the lame
as for the deaf and, in general, men,
    the things they pursue
    the things they chase,
will all be found empty and vain.

..... will all be found empty and vain.

  • Frustrated by Xanga-Changes

So while on Chinese New Years holiday these last 2 weeks, I've taken the time to majorly work through my topical index: Adding to it, editing it, changing it and generally polishing it up for better presentation.  I managed to get from Sept 2008 through January 2012 finished, quite an accomplishment to be honest.  I've color coded things, highlighted things and even worked on updating every old post I touched so that color schemes were clearly defined and recognized.  I did all of this while spending a week at Kai's sister's house.  It was refreshing to have the time to work on this project --- which had already taken up nearly 50 hours time at that point.  I invested another 50 hours into it and made it something quite nice.

Today... I am finally at home... and I find that Xanga has a new posting editor that no longer allows me the freedom I used to have to define my colors for both print and highlight.  Meaning... I can no longer simply highlight the text I wish and click on the appropriate color.

    CURSE YOU XANGA!!!!

While I can use cut and paste to work through the color scheming I desire for my Topical index... I can no longer do so for editing my older posts.  The colors I chose to use are no longer so easily pin-pointed.  Meaning I either shelve that portion of the project, or I push on and leave the work undone and the posts looking crappy.  Here are two early post examples of what I am talking about:

This was an edit from the post entitled "RE-categorizing People" written in May 2009.  (This was part one of a two part posting.  The follow up can be found here: "The Myth / Cult of "GOOD" (Or I'm NOT Ok, You're NOT Ok.)" I recommend reading both for the full picture if this teaser interests you.)

I've always held that there are only two types of people in the world: The Lost and the Saved.  I have come to the conclusion that my categories are incorrect though.  I still believe that there are only two types of people, only now I believe that it would be better stated as "The Children of God & the Enemies of God." and you fall into one of either category.

The color scheme chosen was to offset each category visibly as well as make it visually presentable against the black background I have chosen to stick with.  (For the record, my eyes are sensitive to light --- the darker the background, the easier it is for me to read, hence why everything has always been shaded a bit darker at my blog and why my home has always had the windows covered.)

Here is a post from January 2008 entitled "In defense of THE Church"  The passage is Hebrews 10:24-31 dealing with those who claim they don't need a Church to be telling them how to be Christian.

Did you know.... the harshest words spoken in the Book of Hebrews... is called upon so-called Christians who divorce themselves from the Church?  Read it for yourselves and ask yourself one question... What does "If we DELIBERATELY keep on Sinning" refer back to???

Hebrews 10:24-31 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

26 For If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[d] and again, "The Lord will judge his people."[e] 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Do you really think you can live without the Church????  God doesn't seem to think so.

As you can see, or really can't see, the highlighting I used to use no longer is effective and actually renders the reading of the verse nearly impossible.  I was trying hard to change that... and now... sigh.

I can only hope that the computers at school will allow me the old style editing as I was doing on Kai's sister's old computer.  There's something in Xanga's posting web-editor for the settings that claims to allow the "Old style rich text" to be used... but when I switch to it I don't have any of the old font color or highlighting options that I used to.  Is it because I'm running Windows 7?  Is it because I'm running Firefox 8?  Is it because the aliens have finally invaded and decided the best way to take over is to frustrate us to the point of no longer using the internet?

I'm off to fume for a while.  Grrrrrr.

And Xanga --- a parting word to you ---

WHEN IT'S NOT BROKE DON'T FIX IT!!!
